Dr. Leonardo Valdivia, principal investigator at the Center for Integrative Biology, was selected to present his line of work at the XVI Annual Meeting of the Chilean Society of Neurosciences. There he exposed how functional eyes are built in a vertebrate model during embryogenesis.
The Annual Meeting of the Chilean Society of Neurosciences is one of the most important congresses in the country in its area. Within this event, the Young Neuroscientists Symposium is organized, in which those who are in the early stages of their careers and are in the process of being (or have already become) independent are selected to present their work. Among them, this year's version featured a lecture by Dr. Leonardo Valdivia, academics from the U. Mayor Center for Integrative Biology.
“This is a recognition by the Society of Neurosciences, since it is applied and the exhibitors are selected based on scientific merit and the relevance of the research they carry out. This is very important to me ”, says the researcher, who presented the latest results obtained in his laboratory, on the development and growth of the eyes in embryonic stages, using the zebrafish as a model.
“I presented the generation of a human disease model developed with genome editing techniques (CRISPR / Cas9), which allows us to study the genetic and cellular bases of a particular type of ocular malformation. The grace is that, due to the attractive characteristics of zebrafish, we can study these processes in vivo and understand how an eye is built during embryogenesis in order to elucidate the causes of congenital blindness ”, explains Dr. Valdivia.
The XVI Annual Meeting of the Chilean Society of Neurosciences allowed this year to present national and international research of a very high level, with the aim of promoting neuroscience and promoting communication between researchers in different disciplines, including biologists, biochemists, doctors, and psychologists, among others.
