Development of competences is highly dependent on available state-of-the-art technologies, which also increases research impact and international networking. At CIB we are implementing a research model based on open laboratories and technological platforms. This model potentiate the interdisciplinary nature of the Center.

Description

The RNA analysis unit allows the quantification of nucleic acids by means of a spectrophotometer and a fluorometer luminometer for microplates Thermo Scientific. It also allows the amplification of nucleic acids by an Eppendorf thermal cycler.


The biochemistry unit allows the realization of Western blot. It also has an analytical balance and a micro ultracentrifuge Hitachi.

Description

The electrophoresis unit allows the realization of protein electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gels and nucleic acid electrophoresis in agarose gels.

Description

The cell culture unit allows the realization of primary cultures and the maintenance of cell lines. The following primary cultures are performed: Schwann cells (mouse), dorsal root ganglia neurons (rat), hippocampal neurons (rat), dopaminergic neurons (mouse) and cortical neurons. The HEK cell line is available.

Description

We work with zebrafish to understand the development of the nervous system under normal conditions and genetic compromise. For this we have a room of 33 m2 with a system of stand alone tanks ZD660 Aquaneering of last generation for maintenance of lines of mutant and transgenic fish. The care of the animals is in charge of specialized personnel. Our experimental platform has microinjectors and micromanipulators to deliver intracellular volumes in the order of picoliters to microliters in fecundated eggs of zebrafish. These precision systems are coupled to binocular microscopes that allow the manipulation of embryos and description of phenotypes. Together, these modern resources allow us to perform experiments of gain and loss of gene function, and modifications of the genome of the fish.

Description

The Drosophila animal model unit has wild type flies, as well as transgenic models with reporter genes and knockout models. In vivo, behavioral and survival studies are carried out, complying with basic bioethical and biosecurity norms. Study models of various human diseases are available to evaluate the modification of pathological phenotypes through genetic interactions and drug application.

Description

Wild mice type, models of transgenic mice with reporter genes and knockout mice are available. Studies in vivo and postmortem are carried out according to basics bioethical and biosecurity norms. A wide variety of behavioral studies are performed.

Description

The histology unit allows the preparation of biological samples for light, fluorescence and electronic microscopy. It allows obtaining tissue slices from plastic resin embedded tissues and frozen tissues. It also allows the visualization and obtaining of clear light images through a Nikon microscope equipped with camera.

Description

The CytoFLEX flow cytometer has three lasers (488 nm, 638 nm and 405 nm) and 13 fluorescence detectors. It allows reading samples in Eppendorf tubes and 96-well plates. Optimized to solve lymphocytes, monocytes and granulocytes, as well as nanoparticles. It has the CytExpert software for CytoFLEX.

Description

The Integral Microscopy unit has a Leica DMI8 fluorescence microscope and a Leica TCS SP8 confocal laser microscope. The Leica DMI8 fluorescence microscope allows to obtain high resolution images, it is mounted on a motorized inverted platform. The Leica TCS SP8 confocal microscope with spectral detector and the AOBS (acousto-optical beam splitter) system has four lasers of 405 nm, 488 nm, 561 nm and 647 nm, and eight excitation lines. It allows the visualization of fluorescence in fixed biological samples and also in living cells in culture. Among the techniques that can be carried out are FRET and FRAP. It also allows the visualization of transmitted light with phase contrast, polarization and DIC (Nomarski) optics. It allows to obtain series in the Z axis for 3D reconstructions. We have the necessary support to carry out in vivo experiments (thermoregulated chamber, CO2 control).
