Obtuvo su doctorado en Microbiología e Inmunologia en la Universidad Federal de Sao Paulo, Brasil (UNIFESP). Posteriormente el realizó un Postdoctorado en la misma universidad y un segundo Postdoctorado en Genómica en la Virginia Commonwealth University, Estados Unidos. Posteriormente, regresó a Chile donde fundó, en la Universidad Mayor, el primer Centro de Genómica de Chile. En este centro, comenzó a aplicar abordajes de biología de sistemas para estudiar enfermedades neurodegenerativas

1. El laboratorio de Biología de Redes

El laboratorio de Biología de Redes combina la biología de sistemas con la biología molecular, bioquímica, estudios celulares y animales para comprender los mecanismos de enfermedades humanas. Se aplican enfoques basados en la teoría de redes para construir redes específicas de enfermedades que permiten identificar nuevos genes, vías, subredes responsables de la patología molecular de una enfermedad. Para lograr esto, se recopilan grandes conjuntos de datos (RNAseq, CNV, HUGE, Proteomics) y combinan con un conjunto diversas herramientas bioinformáticas, por ejemplo, el análisis funcional convergente. Este enfoque permite, (i) identificar los cambios topológicos en la estructura general de la red, (ii) desentrañar nuevos genes o nuevas interacciones asociadas con una enfermedad, y (iii) detectar posibles reguladores maestros en las redes específicas de la enfermedad. Una vez que se identifica bioinformáticamente un gen candidato, se investiga su papel durante la enfermedad con un amplio conjunto de herramientas experimentales. Este enfoque actual es la caracterización de nuevos genes implicados en el “diseasosome” de la enfermedad neurodegenerativa esclerosis lateral amiotrófica (ELA).
